Grant of Letters of Administration

If the deceased left no will, their personal representative(s) will usually need to apply to the Probate Registry for a ‘Grant of Letters of Administration’ in order to deal with the estate.

If this Grant is given, the successful applicants are known as 'administrators' of the estate. Like the Grant of Probate, the Grant of Letters of Administration is a legal document which confirms the administrator's authority to deal with the deceased person's assets.

Entitlement to be a deceased’s administrator falls in line and in the same order of priority as those beneficially entitled to the estate under the rules of intestacy.

In some cases, for example, where the person who benefits is a child, the law states that more than one person must act as the administrator.
